Assessment and Diagnosis of Dissociation and Dissociative Disorders: State of the Art
Live Webinar: Saturday 12th Sep 2026
About This Webinar
The assessment of dissociation and the dissociative disorders is a complex and politically-charged issue. Many mainstream clinicians question the validity of dissociative disorders, particularly dissociative identity disorder (DID), which is assumed to be iatrogenic, even as the evidence suggests that misdiagnosis or overlooked dissociative disorders are far more common than malingered or exaggerated ones. Indeed, the most widely-used clinical or research-based structured or semi-structured interviews designed to generate DSM-5 or ICD-10 diagnoses (such as the SCID-5 or CIDI) do not assess for dissociative disorders (though they do now cover trauma and stressor-related disorders).
This webinar will have three main components: 1) A presentation of the main DSM-5 and ICD-11 dissociative disorder categories, including core differences between the DSM-5 and ICD-11 formulations and major differential diagnosis issues. 2) A presentation of the most widely used dissociative disorder diagnostic instruments, including the SCID-D (Semi-Structured Clinical Interview for Dissociative Symptoms and Disorders), DDIS (Dissociative Disorders Interview Schedule) and the TADS-I (Trauma and Dissociation Symptoms Interview). The advantages and disadvantages of each will be discussed, including their usefulness for detecting malingered or exaggerated DID. 3) A presentation of the major screening instruments for assessing dissociative symptoms, including the Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES) – original and revised (DES-R), the Somatic Dissociation Questionnaire (SDQ-20 and SDQ-5) and the Dissociative Symptoms Scale (DSS). The advantages and disadvantages
