ATTACHMENT THEORY SERIES
Clinical Challenges in Working with Less Adaptive Attachment Histories

By Dr Kevin Keith

About This Course

We are still in early days when it comes to deriving benefits from Attachment Theory for psychotherapy with adult clients. But that has been slowly and steadily changing. The theory and its applications continue to represent the largest and most fertile field in developmental research; it is also unparalleled as one of the first and most innovative lifespan theories. And although attachment’s impact on psychotherapy may remain less than Bowlby had hoped, grasping the theory’s importance for work with less adaptive attachment histories may typically present challenges for the therapeutic work. The opportunities include developing corrective experiences via therapeutic relationship, enhancing emotion regulation and expanding a client’s capacity for interpersonal competence. However, these may also require ongoing assessment of the time required for collaborative—the period for growth in such efforts may vary by degree of severity.

The session will focus both on possible interventions and review current outcome evidence.
