An increasing number of women are joining the field of psychotherapy and at the same time the number of men is on the decline. With more women entering psychotherapy and associated helping professions, there has been a simultaneous increase in awareness of gender-related issues, development of new theoretical viewpoints and a paradigm shift within the field of psychotherapy. Feminist tenets have helped to advance both research and practice (such as improved egalitarian client-therapist relationships and questioned biased research) by transforming what has been a male status quo to a more inclusive approach. Feminization of therapy reinforces the historical association between helper and caregiver and the female role.

About Dr Ilene Phillipson
Dr. Ilene Philipson holds doctorates in sociology, clinical psychology, and psychoanalysis. She is a training and supervising analyst at the Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis in Los Angeles, a faculty member at the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis, and is in the private practice of psychotherapy and psychoanalysis in Oakland, California. In addition to On The Shoulders of Women: The Feminization of Psychotherapy, her books include Married to The Job; Ethel Rosenberg: Beyond the Myths; and Women, Class, and the Feminist Imagination (ed). She has taught at UC Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz, and NYU.
