Supervising High-Risk Cases: Ethical, Clinical, and Legal Challenges
Live Webinar: Wednesday 25th Nov 2026
Webinar Details
Clinical supervision becomes particularly demanding when supervisee are working with clients who present significant risk—suicidality, self-harm, violence, severe personality disturbance, dissociation, psychosis, complex trauma, safeguarding concerns, or chronic crises. In these situations, supervisors carry a unique responsibility: supporting the therapist’s development while simultaneously safeguarding client welfare, managing risk, and ensuring ethical and legal obligations are met. Supervision is not simply a forum for case discussion; it is a critical component of professional accountability, clinical decision-making, and quality assurance.
This webinar will explore the complex ethical, clinical, and legal challenges that arise when supervising high-risk cases. Participants will examine the supervisor’s duty of care, responsibilities for risk management, informed consent, documentation, consultation, and decision-making under uncertainty. Drawing on contemporary supervision literature, psychodynamic perspectives, and real-world examples, the session will consider common supervisory dilemmas including incomplete disclosure by supervisees, managing therapist anxiety and countertransference, balancing support with accountability, responding to concerns about competence, and navigating situations involving potential harm to self or others.
Particular attention will be given to how supervisors can create a sufficiently safe supervisory relationship in which difficult material can be openly explored while maintaining appropriate boundaries, professional standards, and legal protections. Participants will leave with practical frameworks for supervising high-risk clinical work, strengthening ethical decision-making, and reducing risk for clients, supervisees, and supervisors alike.
