Trauma and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Live Webinar: Saturday 11th Jul 2026
About This Webinar
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is characterised by the presence of intrusive obsessions and repetitive compulsions that can significantly impair daily functioning. Described by both Freud and Janet in the early history of psychotherapy, OCD is now recognised as a complex neurobiological disorder that can be highly challenging to treat. Despite advances in pharmacological and psychological interventions, approximately 40–60% of individuals continue to experience persistent symptoms, functional impairment, and co-occurring mental health difficulties.
While OCD has traditionally been treated with pharmacotherapy and cognitive behavioural approaches, growing evidence suggests that traumatic life experiences may play a significant role in the development, expression, and severity of obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Emerging research indicates that trauma can shape symptom presentation, influence treatment response, and contribute to the complexity of clinical presentations.
Although the relationship between trauma and OCD has received increasing attention, comprehensive understanding remains fragmented. Recent systematic reviews, however, highlight the multifaceted ways in which traumatic experiences intersect with obsessive-compulsive processes.
This webinar will explore the clinical challenges posed by OCD, examine the emerging evidence linking trauma and obsessive-compulsive symptomatology, and consider the implications for assessment and treatment. Through clinical examples, participants will gain a deeper appreciation of the complexity of OCD and the potential value of integrating psychotherapy with pharmacotherapy to enhance therapeutic outcomes.
