Building a Sustainable Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Practice

Dr Kris Rao

About This Course

Building a private psychodynamic psychotherapy practice requires more than clinical competence. Practitioners must also navigate the practical, ethical, financial and professional realities of establishing a practice that can support meaningful therapeutic work over time.

This course provides a practical framework for developing and sustaining a psychodynamic psychotherapy practice within the Australian and New Zealand context. It explores what distinguishes psychodynamic practice from other private practice models, including the importance of the therapeutic frame, regularity and continuity of treatment, longer-term working, careful assessment and formulation, and the development of professional competence.

Participants will consider the practical foundations of private practice, including practice structure, premises, fees, financial management, break-even points, and the realities of gradually building a caseload. Particular attention is given to how psychodynamic practices develop through professional referral networks, reputation, visibility and relationships rather than marketing alone.

The course also follows the patient life cycle from initial enquiry through consultation, treatment, review and ending, examining how each stage requires clear clinical and administrative processes. Participants will consider referral relationships, communication with referrers, patient suitability, boundaries, supervision, referral-out pathways and ways of measuring the ongoing health and sustainability of their practice.

The emphasis throughout is on building a practice that is not simply busy, but clinically sound, professionally credible, financially viable and personally sustainable.
