LIVE WEBINAR SERIES
A Hierarchy of Homeostasis: The Nonlinear Dynamics of Integration and Trauma

30th September 2026

Dr Jamie Rickord

About This Webinar

The concept of a hierarchy of homeostasis provides an integrative perspective of various expressions of trauma theory considering the Free Energy Principle (FEP), Default Mode Network (DMN) function, and the disintegrating effects of trauma. This framework views the brain's fundamental imperative—to minimize free energy—as a multi-tiered, nested pursuit of stability across different spatial and temporal scales. Trauma catastrophically disrupts this hierarchy, with consciousness and the DMN bearing the brunt of the failure at the highest levels.

This webinar will explore a multi-theorist integrative model of self, trauma, and recovery. James’ stream of consciousness, or self, as described by Meares, exists at the top of a hierarchy of homeostasis that can be understood by integrating Damasio’s feeling body, Solms conscious id, Schore’s affectively shaped right brain and Friston’s hierarchical predictive generative model.
