Managing Therapeutic Distance across Clinical Contexts
By Dr Kevin Keith
About This Webinar
Managing therapeutic distance has emerged from attachment theory clinical best practice research. This webinar will clarify the practical applications from the approach initiated in 2009 and since expanded by Daly and Mallinkrodt. At the same time the webinar will expand this initial scope—insecure but functional attachment—to broader more complex client contexts—personality disorders and other psychiatric conditions. This proposed expansion will turn to notions of how other defences may also appear critical in managing distance with these clients. The webinar will (1) first explore a selection from the range of practical applications identified by Daly & Mallinckrodt (2009). This will include a brief look at the two original case studies from which the Delphi study experts generated recommended therapeutic insights. (2) The next step in the webinar will supplement these insights with symptom features—especially the more traditional defences—typically associated with both a few PDs and other psychiatric contexts. Consideration of possible proposed aetiologies will be conducted along with an application of the Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual—2nd Edition (2017) (PDM-2) approach to neurotic and borderline defence formation. A couple of case vignettes for managing distance will be reviewed as well. Finally, (3) the session concludes with 15 a minute Q&A where managing distance matters be discussed in more detail. The webinar will also identify a few resources for further exploration and further study.
